LYRA has a long tradition of bringing Canadian and US sailors together for top level competition and camaraderie. As you know, that was not possible in 2020 so a program of events on separate sides of the border was assembled.
On Saturday Nov 14, LYRA held a virtual AGM hosted by NYC in Toronto to report and look ahead. Competitors and others will find it extremely interesting.

The 9th annual Regatta for AQVA was held in Montreal’s West Island on Saturday August 21st 2021 and raised over $65,000 for the adapted sailing program run by l’Association québécoise de voile adaptée (AQVA).
Last month the Canadian Foiling Academy was launched at the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron. “The RNSYS is the perfect home for our many foiling programs and this academy will be good for our club’s future,” says Vice Commodore, Lee Gifford-Simms.
These are glorious days to be a sailing addict in Canada. The National/Olympic Team is soaring and getting better all the time. Club and regional racing is back in gear with big regattas including NAs scheduled in places from Vancouver to Kingston to Chester, NS. But best of all, the Canada SailGP Team has emerged.
The 2022 Martin 242 NAs were held in light air in Nanaimo with a fleet size of 15 boats. Many top Regional Teams attended the event, including three-time winner Michael Clements, two-time winner Alex Fox, runners-up Ken Holland and Matt Collingwood, and Phil Cragg and Reto Corfu, a top Vancouver team.
American Magic, which represents the New York Yacht Club, is the first of the four teams for the 2021 America’s Cup to take delivery of a second-generation boat. The other teams, defender Emirates Team New Zealand and challengers INEOS Team UK and Luna Rosa Prada Pirelli Team, all plan on having two boats.
The Spring Thaw Luncheon had been a part of the season for GTA boaters for many years until the passing of its founder and key organizer, Marjorie Patterson. The Luncheon’s goal was to celebrate boating and importantly as a fundraiser for boating causes including Toronto Brigantine and OSA’s BOOM Program.
