The Canadian teams were up against very tough competition as, for the second time in three editions, Southern Yacht Club (New Orleans) won the ‘most prestigious trophy in Corinthian sailing’, the Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup.

Skippered by Olympian, Terry McLaughlin, RCYC, fresh off winning the Canada’s Cup in six straight had a quick turnaround to Newport finished 6th after 12 races over five days. Royal Vancouver’s YC first-time entry into the event, co-skippered by Nigel Cochrane, also an Olympian, finished a respectable 12th.

Nineteen one-design IC37s representing USA, Sweden, Argentina, Ireland, Finland, Italy, Great Britain, and for the first time including two entries from Canada fought it out in a variety of conditions.

The Rolex New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup is a biennial regatta hosted by the New York Yacht Club Harbour Court in Newport, RI. Since the event was first run in 2009, it has attracted top amateur sailors from 48 of the world’s yacht clubs from 21 countries. After five editions in the Swan 42 class, the 2021 event was the second sailed in the IC37.
